StreamOnTheFly is about offering a personalized streaming radio technology with collaborative filtering agents and bandwidth sensitive streaming.

Community Radios have long been without an afforardable mean of archiving, exchanging and streaming their content over the internet. Content that was produced was mainly a single broadcast affair, with no means of secondary usage. Through the introduction of streamonthefly software solutions, community radios now have the option to reuse their produced content either in an exchange or as an accessible archive on the internet. Through RSS syndication as well as a special portal engine, these radio stations can syndicate their content to websites worldwide.


Our objective is to provide a full-featured robust environment using F/OSS technologies and providing these solutions back to the Free Software and Free Content community, as well as the radio community.

All solutions are built with Free Software Technologies and are themselves licensed under Open Source Licenses, providing available and adaptable and cost-efficient solutions for small community radios as well as larger Radios that want to use F/OSS Technologies.

Technical approach

StreamonTheFly is a suite of webapplications to provide a full solution for the archiving and re-use of Audio material. The suite has 3 distinct modules:

  1. Station Control: A webapplication to manage all aspects of a radio station, from scheduling to recording, archiving and publishing selectzed or all shows to -> Node Servers.
  2. Node Server: A distributed network of servers for metadata and binary audio content. Metadata is distributed throughout the network, binary data is stored at the originating node and cached on demand on other nodes.
  3. Portal server: Through easily administered portals, the audio content of the network can be presented through varios interest filters. Thus a portal dedicated to movies, e.g., might feature movie reviews originating throughout the whole netork, thus having a large pool of audio content to enrich the users experience.

PUBLIC VOICE LabĀ“s involvement

PUBLIC VOICE Lab was the project co-ordinator in this project as it has most expertise with the management EU funded projects. Being also one of two technological partners, PUBLIC VOICE Lab was responsible for the successful programming of the station control module as well as the general architecture of the system.
